ARTWORK /// DESIGN

MEMORY THAT GROWS IN TO A SHAPE
THE TREE ALWAYS NEW AS A SEED.

My work attempts to reconstruct or find a different perspective on the forces, conditions & rules that shape the world inside and around us. I want to bring attention to these forces objectively, attempt to withdraw from a human focused perspective or interpretation in the hope of glimpsing at a more broad analysis of life.

MOSAICS.

I've recently become interested in mosaics & pattern making. Using a multitude of different rules that set out how a tile can or can't be placed within the scene generates viral forms and organic configurations.

This has led to various exhibition projects where i have encouraged the viewer to contribute to the piece. Letting them develop their own rules and systems, moving the work in unplanned and unexpected ways.

SYMBOLS.

Symbols as a project aims to create an unusable language, each symbol is created to appear evocative of some unplaceable value or meaning. When arranged together or found alone they are intended to impress upon the viewer the sense that they are being communicated with. It is crucial that the symbols, and their arrangement, only hint at a meaning without revealing anything about their origin or their message.

Symbols is an open sources project that I deliver in to the hands of others to interpret and redistribute as they see fit. This allows others to supply their own rules and methods of using the language, helping it to not only spread, but to develop a sense of reigonality or visual colloquialism.

THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL.

Inspired by the work of Franz Kafka and a recent research trip to Prague, 'The Writing is on the Wall' was one of my first exhibitions. I believe that one of the strongest themes in Kafka's works is his use of architecture to embody the negative forces at work in his books. For example the unobtainable citadel in 'The Castle' Or the labyrinthian corridors of 'The Trial's courtrooms. Using materials such as glass, concrete and slate, and a variety of processes and imagery linked to architecture i attempted to visualise Kafka's writings.

MISC.

A lot of my older work i find harder to categorise even though I can usually draw a line of recognition through it on reflection. Rather than creating another 20 sections to this page I decided to create a miscellaneous section that covers more of my older / less cohesive projects like the early drawing works you can see to the right.

PRINT, GRAPHIC AND WEB DESIGN.

The approach to design work is inherently different from painting or fine art in general, but that doesn't mean it is entirely separate.

One of the real benefits to working on design projects is being allowed to play with other peoples ideas, be it creating artwork for a musician or the identity for an upcoming event.

On the right is a variety of images of design projects i've been involved with.
